Reflections On President Obama's Reelection

I am glad that everybody is all happy about Obama's reelection. I have to say it, it's good that there is a Black man in the White House and a Black woman is our first lady. That's a step forward for America (and I know there are a LOT of folks in this country who still can't stand that).

With that said, he still has to answer to Goldman Sachs, ExxonMobil, JP Morgan Chase and the Bank of America, the folks who actually OWN the country he gets to run.

It is for their venal, selfish, money-driven interest that we are involved in so many wars right now (Afghanistan, Iraq, the drone wars in Pakistan, Yemen, the Philippines and Somalia and Uganda's American "adviser"-driven intervention in the Congolese civil war - that's the war the American media NEVER talk about).

That's why so many of us are out of work, and why so many of the "new jobs" that the media always crow about are minimum wage or close to it. That's why American unions are so weak, why only 11% of American workers have union protection and why 20,000 workers last year were fired (legally!) just because they tried to form a union at their job (at least two friends of mine were fired for just that reason).

That's why there are 1 million Black men and 800,000 Latino men in prison, mostly for bull**** drug charges that, had they been White and had the money to hire a good lawyer, would have gotten them a fine and a trip to rehab.

That's why the Obama administration deported 1.2 million immigrants, mostly hard working people with no criminal history (that's more deportations than any president since Eisenhower's "Operation Wetback" deported 2 million Mexicans in the 1950s)

That's why Obama's healthcare plan isn't going to give you Canadian-style national health insurance - it's basically MITT ROMNEY'S insurance plan from Massachusetts, where you have to buy insurance or you have to pay a fine (unless you are very very poor - welfare poor) and if you are an undocumented immigrant you are **** out of luck because you can't get coverage or medicaid.

That's why, despite the Obama administration's much vaunted defense of abortion rights, we still have the Hyde Amendment, the Carter administration-era law (written by a Democratic Congressman, Henry Hyde) that bars federal funding for abortions for women on medicaid, women in the armed forces, women dependents on military bases, women veterans, American Indian women on the reservations and women in federal prisons and immigration detention camps. Obama never lifted a finger to repeal that law, even when he had a majority in both houses in congress during the first two years of his first term.

That's why marriage equality is left up to the tender mercies of the states (so blue states get it - congrats to Maryland and Washington State BTW for joining the marriage equality club! - and red states don't).

That's why, at a time when powerful storms have wrecked vast areas of this country's largest city, you still see energy companies drilling for oil and dirty coal, with no regard to the damage they are doing to the planet we have to live on, and no serious plan to switch away from fossil fuels.

That's why we still have slavery-era undemocratic relics like the US Senate and the Electoral College - institutions designed by the slave owning millionaires who founded this country to preserve the power of a few rich White men over a nation of slaves, indentured servants and tribal nomads.

This country has all of these problems inflicted on it because a few rich men in boardrooms just a few blocks south of me want it that way.

They want to keep the working class broke and indebted. They want to keep the poor poor, and to keep Blacks, Latinos, women of all colors and gays and lesbians "in our place", to keep the nation divided and to keep all working class and poor people in thrall to the corporations.

They want us at war with half the world (the better to guard their foreign investments) and they don't care if they destroy the planet as long as their quarterly profits are high.

They are moneymen - and your life is less important than their filthy lucre.

Ultimately, Obama answers to them, as Romney would have if he weren't so spectacularly inept and manifestly incapable of serving them in that capacity.

Barack Obama is a hell of a president - a brilliant law professor and a hell of a public speaker (awe inspiring - and I don't impress easy so that's saying something coming from me!) and an able public administrator. He does a very good job of running the nation on behalf of Wall Street, and making the common man and woman on the street thinking he's serving our interests instead of their base selfish needs.

He did a good job for them last term, and he'll continue to do a good job for them - it really is a tragedy that so many of our fellow Americans are so addled by racism that they can't see that.

In any case, never forget who President Obama is running this country for.

Just to be 100% clear, if you aren't a One Percenter, he's not running it for you!
