LABOR TOKENISM IN KANSAS CITY  - the sad case of Bridgett Williams

Turning her back on labor - Bridgett Williams, the head of the Kansas City AFL-CIO, is leaving the labor movement to be the deputy director of the Heavy Constructors Association of Greater Kansas City. 1.

Williams defection to the management side shouldn't be that surprising.

Although she is the wife of a local 533 pipefitter, Williams herself has never herself been an actual union member. She was hired right out of college at age 22 to be the receptionist at the KC AFL-CIO offices, and at age 28, she was catapulted to the presidency of a labor federation she'd never actually been a member of! 2

It should be pointed out that at the time, the Kansas City labor movement was under a lot of pressure because of the blatantly racist hiring practices of many union construction contractors, and the open assistance the unions gave to these racist companies' discriminatory hiring practices.

It might have seemed damned useful to have an African American person heading the labor council - ESPECIALLY if that African American had no independent power base in the local labor movement!

Williams fit the bill - she's African American, and, because she isn't even a union member, she has absolutely no power in the local labor movement!

Basically, Williams was a facewoman for the racist KC labor leadership - and she knew it (when questioned by a reporter about the most important lesson she learned as KC AFL-CIO president, she said it was to "keep my mouth shut and listen")!!!! 3.

Now, Williams goes from facewoman for racist labor leaders to facewoman for White contractors
